Apple crisp: kids edition


Having little children eager to help in the kitchen can be a source of great excitement and joy but also cause of irritation. Nothing can make us more of a perfectionist then letting kids help out!

Finding the balance between, giving the freedom for tiny helpers of experiencing the joy of cooking while having just enough adult supervision to make them think they did it all by themselves, will give you peace in the kitchen.

Here is a super easy dessert that can be mostly made my you little ones

For the filling you will need:

  • 4 large cooking apples
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 TBSP of flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • juice of half a lemon

Crumble topping:

  • 3/4 cup of cold butter cubed
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup old fashion oats
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Step 1

In a large bowl add the butter and flour. Get your hands in there and massage the butter and flour until it resemble texture of wet sand. Add the remaining of the ingredients and set aside.

Step 2

Peel and dice the apples, add the cinnamon, nutmeg, flour and sugar and coat the apples. Drizzle the lemon juice and pour in the buttered baking dish.

Step 3

Add the crumble and put in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown.

Let it cool for a few minutes, serve with whipped cream or ice cream


Tips: For non-readers you can pre-measure the ingredients and having them in separate bowls, that way you can asked them to add ingredients and feel like they are really helping.
